Studio David Thulstrup's Award-Winning Design: Georg Jensen Munich

Scandinavian and Art Deco Influences Merge in a Luxurious Retail Space

Studio David Thulstrup's design for the Georg Jensen Munich store, a blend of Scandinavian simplicity and Art Deco elegance, has won the prestigious Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2016. This article explores the unique features and inspirations behind this innovative design.

The design concept for the Georg Jensen Munich store is inspired by geometric, Scandinavian, and Art Deco references, all rooted in the rich history of the Danish silversmith brand, Georg Jensen. The use of rough hammered terrazzo is a nod to the art of silversmithing and the technique of hammered silver, creating a unique aesthetic that sets this retail store apart.

Studio David Thulstrup has transformed the store into a gallery-like space, showcasing Georg Jensen's most prominent pieces of hollowware, jewellery, and watches. Each merchandise category has its own defined space and atmosphere, leading the customer through the store, one space at a time. The jewellery is displayed within a framing of soft textured walls with a geometric line language, highlighting the delicate Georg Jensen pieces.

The store's realization involved the use of Nextel paint finish to create a luxurious effect on the grey wall surfaces, contrasting the glossy and reflective surfaces of the products on display. The framing effect of the Art Deco niches was emphasized through the use of concealed LED strip lighting, adding a modern touch to the classic design elements.

One of the key challenges in designing the new store concept was to create a fitting link with the old store concept while designing a completely new one. Studio David Thulstrup achieved this by incorporating elements from the old store concept, such as the use of slats, which are a great reference to Scandinavian design and the Art Deco style, both integral parts of Georg Jensen’s rich brand heritage.

The store spans an area of 250 m2 and was developed in Copenhagen, Denmark, and built on-site in Munich, Germany. The project was initiated in August 2014 and completed in May 2015 with the store opening. The result is a space that represents the brand and its history, with a sophisticated and minimalistic design that highlights the merchandise in a unique way.

In conclusion, Studio David Thulstrup's design for the Georg Jensen Munich store is a testament to the power of blending historical references with modern design techniques. The award-winning design offers a unique retail experience, showcasing the brand's products in a space that is as elegant and refined as the items it houses.
